I thought it would be a good idea to give you some background information on me. To give you a little idea on where I am coming from and who I am. So here is a brief history on Mandy Jones, my journey and how I came to be writing this blog.

1973 - 1990.

I was born on the Wirral in the North West of England (UK) in 1973 and I am the eldest of 2 children. If your not sure where the Wirral is (not many people are), then have you ever heard of Liverpool, and the song ‘Ferry Across The Mersey’, well you may have wondered where you were ferrying from in the song! The answer is the Wirral. Now I don’t want to bore you with all the childhood stuff, I’ll just say that I was a 70’s child and yes I had some very dodgy haircuts, and I was also made (as a child) to wear brown dungarees with orange flowers on. Which have strangely come back into fashion!

School Days

I can’t say I really enjoyed school, and I wouldn’t say they were the best days of my life, being 5 foot tall does tend to get you picked on a bit. But the thing I remember the most about this time in my life was my career lessons. All pupil’s had to take them when they chose their GCSE subjects, to try and give you some focus on what you wanted to do when you left school. Some of my friends new straight off they wanted to teach or be a nurse etc. My images of what I would become were a lot greyer. I think at 14 it can be hard to decide such a life changing question like that, and then start preparing for the future, that seems so far away.

I was never one of those children who knew exactly what they wanted to do for a job,I had different hobbies and subjects I enjoyed, but I didn’t see them as career material, partly because I thought they would be too hard to break into successfully. An unfortunate lack of self confidence that has only improved with age and experience. So consequently I found career lessons hard and spent most of my time in indecision changing my mind every 5 minutes.

So What Career Did I Pick?

I always enjoyed creative pursuits, I would have loved to have done Woodwork or Metalwork, I think they call it Design Technology now. But I was in an all girls school so I didn’t have a hope. Information Technology and computers had not quite taken off when I was at school so the only choice for computers at the time was word processing, they were still teaching typing on typewriters! That does make me feel old, or as I like to put it ‘IT has moved on so much in such a small space ot time’ (that’s my story anyway). I also loved Art and Photography and in hindsight that’s what I should have pursued, but that’s easy to say now.

At the time there was fierce competition for graphic designers and photographers and I didn’t have the conviction or determination needed to make it in that business. That has come with time and experience of working life, in different industries and with different people. A harder route to take finding out slowly and by yourself, but I didn’t have the confidence or back up to do it straight off. A very interesting learning curve though. So in summary sadly when it came time to leave school I had no idea what I wanted to do for a career. A friend came to the rescue, he had a friend that needed a trainee dental nurse? So with no other plan I took him up on his offer.

Not what I had ever wanted to do - see what happened in part 2.
